Your response was the correct one. I've had the same thing happen to me. What I do is ask them questions that force them to deal with it. If they can answer the questions, they can figure out what the answer is.

Yesterday I received a question through this website from someone identifying herself as "Jasmine": What are the major internal and external conflicts in the book "Is it still cheating If I don't Get Caught? Here is the response I sent her: Dear Jasmine, Thank you for your question! The major internal and external conflicts in my book, Is It Still Cheating If I Don’t Get Caught?, concern the author of a book on ethics who is asked a question about issues surrounding his book that can be discovered only by reading the book itself. The author wonders, “Should I tell my questioner the answer to her question or instead suggest that she discover the answer on her own?” The conflict is resolved when the author decides that it would be unethical for him to do the questioner’s work for her, just as it would be unethical for the questioner to allow someone else to do work she should be doing herself. He concludes that everyone would be better off if students completed their homework assignments themselves rather than expecting others to do it for them. I hope this helps!
